How do I apply for the Cranberry Fair?

In May the fair coordinator starts to advertise for the current year’s fair by sending out “Calls for Submission”. Through several media outlets as well as via emails and posters in Whitehorse and the communities, the fair organizers invite interested artists and crafts people in the Yukon to apply for participation in the fair.

Applications forms can be:

  • returned when filled out online
  • by sending them attached to an email to: cranberryfair@live.com or
  • by dropping them off at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store.
  • All applications must be received by July 31st.

With the application the following is required:

  • A portfolio describing the arts or fine crafts intended to be presented at the fair,
  • Detailed information about the artist or fine craft person and their exhibition history.
  • Samples (photos or physical pieces) of the ware that is intended to be shown at the fair.
  • A participation fee of CAN$110.00 payable either by cheque made out to Northern Fibres Guild and dropped off at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store  or via E-Transfer to the Northern Guild’s email address: northernfibres@gmail.com

  • Must be handmade in the Yukon (or Atlin)
  • Cannot be print books; hand bound books are accepted as an art of book(let) making

If the applicant is selected for the current fair, the the participation fee will be credited to teh Guild’s account and the portfolio returned.
If the applicant is not selected, the payment will be returned with the artists’ application.

The participation fee of Can$110.00 secures the selected person one space in the exhibition hall.

Each participation fee provides the selected artist/crafter with a square display area of 6’ by 6’, a table the size of 6’ x 2.5’, equipped with a matching skirt and cover, 2 chairs, WIFI and power access, a nametag and small snack bag. Participants are asked to bring their own extension cords to reach the next power outlet as well as extra lighting systems if needed. Special requirements (backdrops, shelving, request to be near a door or another artist, etc.) need to be indicated in the application form. The fair coordinator will try and accommodate these as best he/she can. Past participants are not guaranteed the same location in the room as the previous year.

Who can participate in the Cranberry Fair as an exhibitor?

After receiving your valid and complete application, the below eligibility criteria allow for acceptance into the Jury Process.
Applicants that don’t meet the eligibility criteria will not be submitted to the jury for consideration.

Items accepted into the Jury Process:

  • Must be handmade in the Yukon (incl. Atlin)
  • Cannot be print books; hand bound books are accepted as an art of book(let) making
  • Cannot be food or drink items (new in 2018)

Typical applications are from individual artists applying for one spot. Group applications will only be considered on a one-time basis if all samples represent a coherent body of work from that group. The following year members of this group will have to apply as individuals. Each group member has to apply with its own filled out form, portfolio and samples. Each application is juried in separately. In the end only the applications which are accepted and juried in will be able to share table(s).

Jury Process

All valid applications that meet the eligibility criteria will enter the Jury Process set for the first week in August. A jury group will convene and select participants for the current year’s fair. The group of jurors will consist of arts and crafts knowledgeable people. This group is chosen by the fair coordinator and its members will change each year. The jury group decisions are based on the following 4 criteria: Quality, Originality, Diversity and Creativity. These criteria have been set by the Northern Fibres Guild, founder and organizer of the Cranberry Fair:

Selected participants will be informed immediately after the jury process has taken place. Their participation fee will be credited to the Northern Fibres Guild bank account. Samples will be returned either (if supplied) via a pre-stamped and labelled envelop to the artist/crafter or left at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store for pick up by the applicant.

Applicants not selected will also be informed of the jury’s decision, while their participation fee will be refunded to them. If the applicant wishes so, the application portfolio and any physical samples that have been provided will be returned to the applicant either (if supplied) via a pre-stamped and labelled envelop to the artist/crafter or left at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store for pick up.

Where do I get the application forms?

Applications can be made electronically or physically.

A physical application asks for a printed application form, the portfolio which holds your CV, naming of previously attended fairs and the description of your arts/crafts, along with samples or photos of the pieces you intended to present at the fair. Forms can be downloaded from our website www.cranberryfair.com/Forms, required through our email address: cranberryfair@live.com or be picked up at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store. The required payment of Can$110.00 per application can be made via a cheque made out to the Northern Fibres Guild. Physical applications and cheque payments can be dropped off at the Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store in Whitehorse, located in the Horwoods Mall at the corner of Main and Front Street

An electronic application requires to fill out an online application form on our website www.cranberryfair.com/Forms and then to attach copies of your portfolio and samples. Electronic payment of your participation fee of Can$110.00 can be made via E-Transfer to the Northern Fibres Guild email address: northernfibres@gmail.com

If you choose to mix parts of above options, please make sure you provide all three required parts in the end: form, portfolio & samples and the payment.

Experience recommends to supply actual, physical pieces of arts/crafts with your application which represent what you wish to sell at the fair. Photos or online documentations are very limited in demonstrating the true quality of your work.

The application deadline of July 31st must be respected.

How big is a display space at the Cranberry Fair?

The fair participation fee secures the successfully selected artist/craft person one space on the fairgrounds.

Each participation fee provides the selected artist/crafter with a square display area of 6’ by 6’, a table the size of 6’ x 2.5’, equipped with a matching skirt and cover, 2 chairs, WIFI and power access, a name tag and small snack bag. Can I bring my own table or a back display? Can I just get floor space?

We discourage you from bringing your own table, as we prefer the tables provided by the event management for their elegant and matching style.

Back drops behind the table are possible, however not every place in the hall offers itself up for that. To bring a backdrop needs to be indicated on the application form. We will work to accommodate everybody’s wishes regarding placements.

If you chose to book just floor space and bring your own racks or shelves, the participation fee is still Can$110.00.

Please keep in mind that you cannot extend beyond your 6’ x 6.5’ allotment.

Can I apply for more than 1 table?

The amount of available floor spaces in the exhibition hall is limited. The jury has to match their selection to that.

In case the jury selected less participants than available floor spaces, we will offer the remaining tables to all successful applicants, which expressed interest in additional table spaces.

The coordinator will draw from a waiting list established by the jury group in the order of the jury’s preference.

Another fee of Can$110.00 is required for any extra table.

Can I take a place of someone that canceled his/her participation?

Participation at the Cranberry Fair is not transferable.

Transferring a table spot means giving the table spot to a person that has not gone through eligibility and jury process.

Once applicants are selected by the jury group their participation fees are non-refundable.

New and effective from 2018: Applicants who were accepted by the jury group and subsequently cancelled are automatically ineligible to apply for one year. The coordinator will fill cancellations from an established waiting list

What payment options are available for buyers at the fair?

The fair does not provide a central credit card payment unit.

Exhibitors can bring their own unit or a square. (WIFI is available and the password will be provided at fair day)

An ATM machine is located in the Cultural Centre’s hallway.
